Bangor St Deiniol

St Deiniol Golf Club is in Bangor, and often referred to as Bangor St Deiniol. The course overlooks the Menai Strait and across the water to Anglesey. 

 

James Braid was the man to design the course, with the five-time Open Champion’s layout remaining much the same as what it was when the club opened back in 1906. 

 

The course is only 5,650 yards long, but plays as a Par 68. Exposed to the elements on the hilltop, there is plenty of danger around at St Deiniol.

As with most venues that you will find on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, St Deiniol Golf Club dates back more than a century. 

 

The club was founded in 1906 and a legend of the game designed the layout. Five-time Open Champion James Braid was the man to lay out the 18-hole course in Bangor, and it is a course that has barely changed since.  

A round at St Deiniol is not just about golf, it is also about the location and the views you can enjoy during your walk. Thanks to its elevated position, the course offers views of Snowdonia, the Great Orme, Puffin Island, and the Menai Strait. There are parts of the course that play in and amongst the trees, while other parts are exposed to the elements.  

 

It is definitely not the longest course that you will find on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, coming in at just 5,650 yards. However, there are plenty of challenges on the Par 68 course, which features just two par 5s along with six par 3s. The two par 5s are the only two holes on the property over 400 yards in length. 

 

The first three holes are all par 4s, with the opening hole only 330 yards from the tips. The 2nd is a dog-leg right around the trees, while the 3rd is the longest of the trio, and a dog-leg left. The 4th is a 240-yard par 3 which plays from an elevated tee box, and across the fairways of both the 5th and 6th.

 

6 is the hardest hole on the property, at 398 yards. There are then back-to-back par 3s at the 7th and 8th, with the latter touching 200 yards and playing across both the 9th and 14th holes. 

 

10 is also a par 3, the first of three on the back nine. The next three holes are all par 4s, between 340 and 365 yards. You then get to the 14th, the opening par 5 and the longest hole on the course. It is 530 yards from the tips and plays as a dog-leg right and a true three-shotter around the corner.

 

15 is just 145 yards, with the 16th then being the easiest hole on the card at just 315 yards. The 17th is the shortest hole on the course, at just 127 yards, with the closing hole being a par 5, and another birdie opportunity. 18 comes in at just over 500 yards and is a slight dog-leg left.  
 

Where is Bangor St Deiniol Golf Club located?  
St Deiniol Golf Club is in the northwestern corner of mainland Wales, overlooking the Menai Strait and across the water to the isle of Anglesey. Bangor is just west of the golf club, with the A5 running alongside the course's eastern boundary. It is just a couple of miles from the A55, which links the area to the north of the country and through to England.  

 

Bangor Station is in the town centre of Bangor, and less than a mile from St Deiniol Golf Club. Bangor Station is well-serviced, with trains to a wide array of destinations. London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham International and Cardiff Central can all be reached. The two nearest major international airports are both across the border in England. They are Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport, both within 90 minutes of the club.

The trio of Anglesey, Holyhead and Bull Bay, located on the isle of Anglesey, are all within 30 miles from Bangor St Deiniol, while Conwy, Llandudno Maesdu and North Wales are within the same distance to the east along the northern coastline.

What golf facilities does St Deiniol Golf Club offer?  
Away from the course, St Deiniol Golf Club does not have a driving range, but there is a practice net and a short game area for golfers to get some practice in before taking to the course.
