Bury Golf Club

Bury was founded in 1890 and thus has a rich history – including strong links with the legendary Harry Vardon, who won the Open Championship on six occasions.    Vardon was the first professional at this club and won the first of his Opens only months after he left Bury for Ganton.   Located five miles north of Manchester city centre and has excellent motorway links within a few minutes drive. There is also accommodation nearby. One of the premier courses in the North Manchester area, it is situated between Whitefield and Bury on the A56 about five minutes north of junction 17 of the M60 ring road.  This par-70 semi-moorland course is not long by modern standards at 6,088 yards but is considered to be a very good test of golf due to the need for accurate second shots as a result of the narrow approaches and strategically placed sand traps.   Of the four par 3s, the 17th is the pick; a superb 110-yard hole playing to a plateau green, it shows holes needn't be long to be excellent.   There are two par fives, the 6th and 9th. The 6th was revealed a new hole for 2011 and measures 529 yards but plays longer as it is mostly uphill after the drive. When playing the 9th longer hitters who want to try for the green in two should be very careful  of the out of bounds on the left.   The course has improved dramatically in the last 12 months and is an absolute pleasure to play, every hole is different and  however many times you play it is never boring and requires a different approach dependant on wind and weather conditions.
