Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club
It is difficult to believe Cleobury Mortimer was founded less than 20 years ago; it is already one of the best golf complexes in Shropshire.
The club was established by Robert and Graham Pain in July 1993 on the picturesque Shropshire and Worcestershire border and its 27 holes have matured exceptionally quickly.
Indeed, Cleobury Mortimer is one of the most popular golf courses in the Midlands, nestled as it does along the picturesque Wyre Forest.
The Pains laid out the course under the guidance of Midlands County Development Officer Ray Baldwin and its three loops of nine wind their way round the peaceful, scenic surroundings.
The first nine to be built was Deer Park, a 3167-yards, par-35 course on the back of Wyre Forest. The stand-out hole here is arguably the stroke index 1 2nd.
This is a cleverly-designed two-shotter (par 5 for the ladies), requiring a solid drive to be positioned right of the large oak tree which sits in the middle of the fairway.
After a well-executed tee shot, a mid-to-low iron second shot can leave an attractive birdie. However, danger lurks in the form of a bunker 25 yards short of the green and especially in the watery grave which awaits at the back of the green.
The Badgers Sett loop opened in 1996 and has water and large bunkers to catch you out but it is not tricked up – there are wide, majestic fairways to hit.
Badgers Sett is also home to the club's 'signature' hole, the 6th. It is a par 3 measuring 150 yards off the back tees. From this elevated position there is a nice big green with a horseshoe lake around it.
Add the picturesque Wyre Forest in the background this hole offers a great chance for a birdie – as well as a picture – opportunity.
If you want to make your stay longer, Cleobury have excellent four-star self-catering country lodges onsite. The final loop to open was Foxes Run, which was added two years after Badgers Sett. To many members it is the most exacting nine holes. It comprises three par 3s, a par 5 and five par 4s in its 2,980 yards; it will test your course management skills. Here, it is sometimes more rewarding to keep the driver in the bag and lay up rather than go for it. In addition to being a great test of golf for every standard of player, Cleobury boasts great conditions all year round with no temporary greens Although run as a member's club with competitions and matches held all year round for our members, visitors and guests are made most welcome at all times. There is also have a putting green, a separate chipping and bunker practice area as well as an area to practise with long irons and woods.
