Dore & Totley Golf Club
Situated in a leafy Sheffield suburb, Dore and Totley GC is undoubtedly one of the best golf courses in the city, offering members and guests a wonderful 18-hole venue.
The club was founded in 1913, and its name is derived from a time when the playing of golf in the Sheffield Union was prohibited on a Sunday. A dedicated group of golfers formed the club to continue playing, but named it after the local railway station as trains provided the best means of travelling beyond the city limits at this time.
What stands now is a classy 6763 yard par 72 parkland, designed to appeal to both low and high handicap players.
Whilst most Sheffield golf courses succumb to steep hillside locations, Dore and Totley is unique in the sense that it's contours are more gentle.Whilst most Sheffield golf courses succumb to steep hillside locations, Dore and Totley is unique in the sense that it's contours are more gentle. This makes the course easier to walk but still allows players to enjoy the challenges of playing golf over the undulating land that Sheffield is built upon.
History and tradition are justifiably strong within the club, with much memorabilia on display. The centrepiece of these being the Ryder Cup jacket, clubs and other mementos from Arthur Lees - who represented his country on four occasions.
Visitors can also experience many of the challenges enjoyed by such great players as George Duncan, Abe Mitchell, Harry Varden and Tony Jacklin on competitive visits to the course.
