Palmares | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

The Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort is a stunning resort in a picturesque setting. There are three sets of nine glorious holes, with incredible views over the Meia Praia and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Along with the golf course, the resort is also the home to a brand new clubhouse, incredible apartments and a boutique hotel.

The three courses at Palmares were designed by the great Robert Trent Jones Jr, and are three very different challenges. Named after the nearby areas, the Alvor, Lagos and Praia provide something completely different. The Praia nine is the links-style nine, down by the beach, while the Alvor and Lagos nines offer up a more parkland feel, with some elevated tee shots providing incredible views.

Away from the golf course, Palmares plays host to an astonishing clubhouse, which was designed by RCR Arquitectes. Opened in 2023, it has added another layer to the golfing experience at Palmares. With views from the decking overlooking the Praia Course, it is a great place to relax after a round. The Al Sud restaurant, open from Wednesday to Sunday, provides gourmet cuisine for the resort’s guests.

In terms of accommodation, Palmares provides two stunning options. The Signature Apartments are the staple of the resort, with a range of one-, two- and three-bedroom properties. There is also the boutique Beach House Hotel, which offers 20 stunning rooms and suites, all with their own private balcony, looking out over the golf course and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Palmares has a little bit of everything. With the future plans including more apartments and villas, as well as renovations to the golf courses to keep them at the high standard they are, the Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort is a wonderful place to spend a week, or even more…

Palmares Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Three Glorious Nines

Palmares is the home to three stunning sets of nine holes, all of which provide their own challenges. They are named after the local area. Holes 1-9 are called Alvor, with 10-18 called Lagos, due to the directions they face and the local towns. Holes 19-27 are called Praia, due to its locality to the beach - Praia meaning beach in the Portuguese language.

The original Palmares was designed by Frank Pennink in the 1970s. The new design was the brainchild of Robert Trent Jones Jr, one of the world’s most well known golfing architects. Now the course is a mixture of parkland and authentic links – something unique in the Algarve.

Due to the nature of the three nines, golfers can play three combinations of 18 holes. The Alvor/Lagos combination is holes 1-18, while the Lagos/Praia set features holes 10-27. The Praia/Alvor sees golfers start with holes 19-27, before then playing holes 1-9.

The Alvor Nine
The Alvor sits at the northern part of the resort, and it has a parkland character. From the 4th tee, which is the highest point at Palmares, there are amazing views of the Monchique hills and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance as you look down the fairway.

There are plenty of changes in elevation, and there is not a flat hole on the nine-hole Alvor loop. At the northeastern side of the loop, through holes 6 and 7, there is a glimpse of the links style golf that comes on the Praia nine.

The Lagos Nine
The Lagos also begins in a parkland fashion, much like the Alvor. There are only two water hazards at Palmares, and they both appear on the Lagos nine. The short par-3 12th sees golfers play over the water to a shallow green, while water reappears at the green on 15, after getting to the brow of the hill in the fairway.

The course widens out for the 16th and 17th holes (7th and 8th of Lagos), with golfers being immersed into the dunescape on the southern side of the site. The round concludes with the 18th, which climbs back to the clubhouse and back into the parkland setting that you started the nine with.

The Praia Nine
The third nine at Palmares is completely different to the Alvor and Lagos. The Praia nine sees golfers play among the dunes by the beach, which Praia translates to in Portuguese.

Sitting at the southwestern part of the resort, the 19th hole sees golfers start in a parkland setting, but after getting to the green, the course opens out into the dunescape.

Like a lot of links courses, especially in the United Kingdom, a railway line runs through the course, with four holes playing between the railway line and the coastline. The 27th hole follows the 18th on the Lagos back up to the clubhouse, to complete a truly stunning round of golf.

Palmares Golf Academy

Along with the three stunning nine hole golf courses, Palmares is also the home to a Golf Academy. The academy has an uphill, 300-yard driving range. Golfers play from grass tees, which are kept in the same pristine condition that they will find out on each of the three nines.

Playing uphill, there are six target greens to aim at to hone in the approach game, each of which has bunkers to protect it to give you a feel of what’s to come. Dotted around the resort are practice greens for putting and chipping, with one by the opening tee box of each nine.

Almerindo Sequeira is a PGA Portugal Professional since 1996, and is the Head Professional at Palmares. He attended the Level IV Golf Coach Professional Course, which is certified by the Portuguese Golf Federation and PGA Europe. Sequeira has a wide teaching and coaching experience, and he can provide tuition and lessons for golfers of all levels and experience, to help improve their games.

Stunning Accommodation Options

The Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort has a range of accommodation options to suit all guests. As expected, each is incredibly luxurious and provides guests with everything they need during a stay at the resort.

Signature Apartments
The Signature Apartments are the main part of Palmares’ accommodation, with the resort boasting 37 stunning apartments. They come in either one-, two- or three-bedrooms with each apartment coming fully equipped with a living area, kitchenette and glorious bathroom facilities.

The Signature Apartments are situated right at the heart of the resort, next to the 10th hole and with stunning views of the property. Each apartment has either a terrace or balcony to enjoy the panoramic views of Lagos Bay and the Meia Praia.

Beach House Hotel
Fancy a room instead of an apartment? Then the Beach House Hotel is the place to stay at Palmares. Attention to detail is the key at the Beach House Hotel at Palmares, with no stone unturned when it comes to luxury.

The Beach House Hotel is located between the 27th green and the driving range, and like the Signature Apartments, each room and suite comes with its own private balcony overlooking the golf course and with views of the Meia Praia and the Atlantic Ocean.

The boutique hotel features just 20 rooms, including two suites, which have all been decorated with a contemporary design and in soft colours to allow relaxation.

Real Estate Opportunities

For those who enjoy a stay at Palmares, and like the look of a more long-term approach at the resort, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in purchasing real estate at the Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort.

Embracing the colours and textures of the natural environment, the one, two and three-bedroom Signature Apartments are fully fitted and equipped. These are bought on a contract with Palmares, allowing the resort to then rent the apartments out for a period of time throughout the year.

The second phase with 44 units has already started construction and is due to be concluded by the first quarter of 2025. With a high demand for properties at Palmares, the resort is already working on Phase III of the Signature Apartments section of the property.
