Penha Longa | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

The Penha Longa Resort is one of the best in Continental Europe, thanks to a stunning golf course, luxurious accommodation and a state of the art spa and wellness centre. Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and just 20 miles from Lisbon, Penha Longa is in the perfect place for a golf holiday.

Robert Trent Jones Jr. was the man to design both courses, with 27 stunning holes of golf available to guests and visitors alike. The 18-hole Atlantic Course is the championship course at the resort, and was only a couple of years old when it first played host to the Open de Portugal on the DP World Tour. 2018 Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn was the man to win the last edition of the competition held at Penha Longa.

The resort’s second course, the Monastery 9-hole track, provides the perfect accompaniment to the Atlantic Championship venue. These 27 holes of golf, along with the Penha Longa Golf Academy, headed up by former professional golfer Antonio Dantas, provide the perfect golfing environment during a stay.

That stay can come in one of three forms, with the Penha Longa Resort being the home to some astonishing accommodation. The rooms and suites are all decked out with mod-cons, including LED TVs and Nespresso coffee machines, while having private balconies so you can enjoy the views of the Natural Park. Add the resort’s spa into the mix, and Penha Longa is the perfect golfing holiday venue.

Penha Longa Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

27 Stunning Golf Holes

The Penha Longa Resort is the home to 27 incredible golfing holes, split into a championship 18-hole course and a shorter 9-hole course. Both tracks were designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., with the renowned American golf course architect using the natural beauty of the region and designing two courses that flow freely between the natural hazards.

The 18-hole championship course - the Atlantic Course - was opened in 1992. There are incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and the coastal towns of Cascais and Estoril during a round on the Atlantic.

The course achieved its championship status just two years after its inception, when it hosted the Open de Portugal. It hosted the DP World Tour event on three occasions, with Philip Price, Adam Hunter and Thomas Bjorn tasting success.

The Monastery Course, launched in 1995, is the perfect complement to its sister course. Known as Holes 19-27 at the Penha Longa Resort, there are some gems. 22 and 26 are both stunning little par-3s. The former has great views of the Monastery and Penha Longa Rock, while the 26th runs down the side of Lagoe Verde. Don’t hit it right!

Penha Longa Academy

Penha Longa Resort’s Golf Academy offers facilities for golfers of all abilities. There is a driving range with more than 30 bays, including several on grass, three putting greens and a chipping area, all to be used in the aim of honing skills before taking on either of the two courses.

Head Professional Antonio Dantas, who has been with the Penha Longa Resort for almost three decades, is on hand to provide tuition and lessons, both privately and among groups. The Academy provides golfing clinics for beginners of the game, helping them with the basics.
