Salgados | Top 100 European Golf Resorts

Salgados is yet another offering on the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list that is based on the Algarve in Portugal. There is a tricky and technical golf course on site, designed by Pedro Vasconcelos, along with three amazing accommodation options, with a glorious spa, kids’ club and much more for a holiday.

The golf course is possibly one of the flattest tracks on our Top 100 list, but Pedro Vasconcelos’ design is a stunner. The course, which opened in 1994, winds its way around the natural features, including trees, foliage and plenty of water hazards. Alvaro Mano’s renovations in 2012 just added another layer of quality to the golf course, making it one of the best places to play golf in the Algarve.

The accommodation at Salgados is wide-ranging to say the least. There are three main areas - the Salgados Palace, Salgados Dunas Suites and the Salgados Palm Villages. The latter is the main offering, a 4-star hotel with 275 apartments that can be rented out during a stay.

After that, there is the 5-star luxury Salgados Palace, which backs on to the golf course. This is the best of the best at the resort, and includes the Felicitas Spa Palace, where guests can relax and unwind with a number of massages and treatments. For families visiting the resort, the Salgados Dunas Suites are the perfect place to stay, with a range of rooms, and suites that can sleep up to eight on offer. There is also a kids club and childminding services at the Dunas Suites.

Whether it’s a golfing holiday, a couples break with the idea of pampering yourselves in the spa, or a family holiday, there is something for everyone at Salgados.

Salgados Overview | NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts

Salgados Golf Course

The golf course at Salgados is one of the most challenging in the Algarve region, thanks to Pedro Vasconcelos’ design. The course opened in 1994 and although it is relatively flat, there are plenty of technical challenges throughout the lay-out. Alvaro Mano came in in 2012 and put his own stamp on the course with some renovations, to the lay-out that is played today.

The 18-hole course plays as a Par 72, and measures in at more than 6,640 yards. That isn’t the longest course by any means, especially for a flat lay-out, but there is danger lurking on almost every hole and plenty of water hazards flanking the fairways.

That water comes into play from the very first tee shot, as a lake runs down the entire left side of the 1st hole. The 2nd then plays around the opposite side of the lake, and it is a stunning double dog-leg par-5 that just seems to continue turning to the right. 6 is almost a carbon copy of the 2nd, but plays with an extra 55 yards to make it more difficult.

The approach to the 11th plays over water, while the short par-3 12th is also played over one of the several lakes at Salgados. Although it is only 142 yards from the back tees, that is played entirely over water so being short is not an option. 14 and 15 are back-to-back par-5s, with the latter being the longest hole on the course, measuring almost 600 yards. The course finishes with a tricky dog-leg right par-4, which brings you back to the clubhouse.

Salgados Golf Academy

Along with the stunning 18-hole golf course, Salgados is also the home to some amazing practice facilities. There is a full-length driving range with both matted and grass tees so golfers can practise in all weather conditions.

As well as the driving range, Salgados is also the home to a good short game area. The putting green provides a range of different putts, while there is also a chipping green with greenside bunkers so golfers can practise short sand shots.

The Salgados Golf Academy and Golf School comes from the practice facilities, with the team of qualified professionals on hand to offer coaching and tuition in a range of forms. With both individual and group coaching available, and for all ages and abilities, there is tuition for everyone at Salgados.

NAU Hotels & Resorts

NAU is the hotel brand that forms the accommodation at the Salgados Resort, and there is plenty to choose from, with a range of styles and options. There is the Salgados Palm Village, the Salgados Palace and the Salgados Dunas Suites.

Salgados Palm Village
The NAU Salgados Palm Village is the all-inclusive option at the resort. The 4-star hotel features 275 apartments which are made to feel like home for guests enjoying a stay in the Algarve. Each apartment has its own private balcony with views of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

The Junior Apartments are the smallest and most basic offering, but even these one-bedroom facilities provide a gorgeous place to rest your head. With a double bed and a sofa bed in the living room, Wi-Fi and a private bathroom, it might be the ‘basic’ option, but it is still glorious.

From there, the Salgados Palm Village has a range of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments in its repertoire, with the latter providing a place to stay for groups of up to eight people. Every guest has access to the ten swimming pools that are at the hotel and the resort, along with all of the facilities at Salgados.

Salgados Palace
The Salgados Palace is the 5-star luxury accommodation offering at the resort. Situated on the corner of the golf course, Salgados Palace has multiple restaurants and swimming pools, along with a gym, spa and more.

Every room at the Salgados Palace comes with its own private balcony, and the Standard Double Room, the basic offering, still comes with a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi, sofabed and double bed, en-suite bathroom and much more. There are also Double Rooms with both a sea view or a pool view. The range of accommodation gets better at Salgados Palace, with Resort Suites, Sea View Suites and the Presidential Suite, with the latter being the best of the best at the Palace.

The Felicitas Spa Palace is the holistic wellbeing offering at Salgados Palace. The spa circuit features a Turkish bath, hydrotherapy, jacuzzi and a contrast shower, while there is also the option to enjoy a massage or treatment from a certified professional.

Salgados Dunas Suites
The Salgados Dunas Suites is the more family-orientated offering at the Salgados Resort. There are more than 150 rooms and suites at the Salgados Dunas Suites, all of which have recently undergone a renovation to bring another level of luxury to a stay on the Algarve.

They range from the Standard Double Room, which can also be taken with a view of either the Atlantic Ocean or the resort’s pools. There are then Junior Suites and Three-Bedroom Suites, with the latter being perfect for larger families who want to travel to Portugal. Both of these offerings also come with either an ocean or pool view.

There is a Kids Club and childminding services at the Salgados Dunas Suites, with a team of qualified professionals on hand to look after children. With activities, entertainment and games, the kids will certainly be occupied throughout the day.
