Gay Hill Golf Club

Formerly known as Gay Hill GC, Hollywood is a beautiful 18-hole parkland course located just south of Birmingham off the M42.

 

Tight fairways and fast greens make for a real test, despite the course not being the longest at 6,406 yards.

 

The course is laid out in a valley with gently sloping sides, and contains a stream and its tributary - an asset used is used to great effect on several holes to create natural hazards. The tree-lined fairways and proximity of the streams on several holes make this a course which challenges and rewards players at all levels of skill and ability.  The quality of the course was recently recognised when head greenkeeper Vince Gilroy won Greenkeeper of the Year at the 2012 Pro Shop Awards. 

Founded in 1913, the club celebrated it's centenary last year and boasts a long and rich history. Members opted to change the name last year in order to make the club more synonymous with the surrounding local area.

The 12th is the course’s signature hole. A par 3 of just 120 yards, it is played from an elevated tee, through a dell ringed by hawthorn to a relatively small green. Viewed in spring the blossom this hole is a stunning sight.

 

Several holes, notably the 6th, 16th, 17th, and 18th, are 'ridge and furrow' fairways; rarely seen on golf courses these days, so you will need to plan your shots with care.

 

These fairways make it difficult to hit accurate running shots into the green, and players are often forced to hit more lofted shots on the approach. The nature of the land also means that finding a solid flat lie is relatively rare, so your will nearly always be hitting the ball from either above or below your feet.
