Another Harry Colt heathland that has picked up some definite parkland tendencies through the decades, Old Fold Manor has a history that stretches far beyond the hundred plus years that golf has been played at this stretch of Barnet. It’s understood the Battle of Barnet in 1471 – one of the final acts of the long-running War of the Roses – took place on land that now includes the course and which saw Henry VI and Edward IV face off in the fog in a skirmish that involved 25,000 men.

The moat that guards the 18th green, and provides a punch to a closing stretch that includes two long par 4s weighing in at more than 400 yards each, is also around 1,000 years old.

There’s a reason why Old Fold Manor was the host of Open regional qualifying for five years between 2006 and 2010 and it’s the putting surfaces.

To call them tricky would be an understatement. Take the 15th, for example. At just 297 yards off the back tees, it’s well in range for the bigger hitters and should be an easy par 4 for the rest of us.

But reaching the green is one thing, getting the ball in the hole is quite another. This is a devilishly firm and contoured green and it’s why a hole that’s a swish for some in terms of length can actually be ranked 12th on stroke index.

It’s holes like this that hold the attention at Old Fold Manor. You grow into a round here. Comfortable after a modest start, you’re rocked back in your tracks at the 404-yard 3rd that plays into the prevailing wind and requires the negotiation of a two tier green.

And with blind tee shots, well-protected greens and those craftily contoured putting surfaces, you are always kept on your toes.
