Originally founded in 1908, Westport Golf Club went through three locations before settling on its current spot on the coast of the North Atlantic Ocean.  

 

Fred Hawtree designed the current layout, which features several holes that wind their way either through or across the water. 

 

Now playing over 7,000 yards from the tips, the course has played host to the Irish Amateur Close Championship several times.

1908 saw the founding of Westport Golf Club, which took on three locations before settling on its current spot on the coast. 

 

Fred Hawtree was the man to design the course at its current location – the Westport House Estate - which opened in 1973. 

 

The course has championship pedigree, having hosted the Irish Amateur Close Championship on three occasions.  

The course now sits in Westport House Estate, and under the shadows of Croagh Patrick, with views out to see and across to Roman Island. Thanks to extensions to Hawtree’s original design, the course at Westport Golf Club now plays at more than 7,000 yards from the championship blue tees. The course plays as a Par 73, and the back nine is significantly longer than the front nine. 

 

The course opens with a pair of gentle par 4s, both playing under 350 yards from the tips. The 2nd plays as a slight dog-leg left, with a pot bunker on the left of the fairway that must be avoided. The 3rd is the first of four par 3s at Westport, with the tee shot being played to the green through a funnel of trees. 4 is the easiest hole on the course, and the first of five par 5s on the Par 73 layout. With a good drive, most will be able to go for the green with their second shot, thanks to the yardage on the 4th being less than 500 yards. Another short par 4 follows, before the course starts to bare its teeth.  

 

Seven of the eight hardest holes on the course come in the next eight, so make sure you have some scoring under your belt from the opening five. This treacherous run starts with the 455-yard par 4 6th hole. There is not much trouble on the drive, but a sloping green is guarded by bunkers. 7 is a lengthy par 5, and followed by another long par 4. At 470 yards from the tips, the 8th is the hardest hole on the front nine. Two solid shots are required to hit this green, and with a pond on the right of it, anything left faces a difficult up and down. The front nine ends with a 200-yard par 3 and a green guarded by three bunkers. 

 

There is momentary respite on the 10th, another relatively easy par 5, before you come to three very tricky holes. The 11th is a 435-yard par 4 which sees you hit your drive up a slight incline. If you’re not on the right side of the fairway then your shot to the green will be blind. The tee shot at 12 provides you with a glorious view of Roman Island in the distance, but don’t be distracted – there is a 230-yard par 3 to contend with. The water is in the background for your tee shot, so the majority will come up short. The 13th is then the hardest hole on the course and ends this tough run of holes. A dog-leg from right to left, with trees and bunkers all around, a par is a very good score on 13. 

 

The 14th is another par 3 with the water in the background. At 190 yards, 14 is one of the shortest holes on the course, but it still has its own little challenges. The closing stretch continues at Westport with the par 5 15th, the longest hole on the property. The tee shot is played over an inlet of the North Atlantic Ocean and then has the water down its left side. 16 and 17 offer up birdie opportunities late on, with the course finishing with another par 5. This time, water follows the hole down the right side, all the way to the green, making par on the last a good score. 

Where is Westport Golf Club located?  
Westport Golf Club is on the western coast of Ireland, with several holes based on the coastline of the North Atlantic Ocean. The course is a couple of miles outside the town of Westport, and from the N59 which runs between Galway and Ballysadare.  

 

Westport Station is just three miles away from Westport Golf Club, and is at the end of the line. Trains run from Westport to Dublin Hueston regularly each day. Ireland West Airport Knock is the nearest airport to the golf club – around 35 miles from the venue. Flights to the United Kingdom and a number of European destinations are available. For those visitors to Ireland from further afield, Dublin Airport is the best bet. The nation’s biggest international airport is 160 miles to the east.

Along with the championship golf course, Westport Golf Club is also home to a floodlit driving range which allows golfers to practice into the evenings. There is also a short game area with a putting and chipping green.
