The Wentworth Club celebrated its centenary year in 2022, and has played host to the West Course since its inception. Harry Colt was the man to design it, along with the East Course, which was also built at the same time.

The venue is the headquarters of the DP World Tour, and also features a hotel and country club for its members, along with three 18-hole golf courses.

The British Masters, the Women’s British Open, the World Match Play and the BMW PGA Championship have all been held on the West Course at the Wentworth Club, with the latter being the DP World Tour’s flagship event and held every year at Wentworth since 1984.

The Wentworth Club was founded in 1922, with golf being added to the estate four years later. The great Harry Colt designed both the East and West Courses at Wentworth in the early 1920s, with the precursor to the Ryder Cup being played in 1926. 

Gary Player, John Jacobs and Bernard Gallacher designed the Edinburgh course, the third course at the Wentworth Club, which was opened by his Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 1990.

Along with the 1926 precursor to the Ryder Cup, Wentworth’s three courses have each played host to major events. Those include the British Masters, Women’s British Open, The World Match Play and the BMW PGA Championship, which remains an annual event on the DP World Tour.

The likes of Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Rory McIlroy are just some of the names who have been successful at the Wentworth Club over the years.

The greens of the West Course at Wentworth made history, as they were the first in England to benefit from SubAir technology, which controls the moisture levels of the turf - something much needed in England.

Most know the structure and lay-out of Wentworth West, due to the course being the host venue of the BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship competition. The par 72 lay-out measures at over 7,250 yards, and has seen some famous shots during its 100-year history.

The 1st tee sees players play away from the clubhouse and the home of the DP World Tour. Four bunkers guard the 1st green, one that is accessible by long iron after the tee shot. 2 is a short par-3 played over a valley, before the 3rd is the second of several par-4s measuring more than 450 yards. 4 is a good birdie opportunity. It says 550 yards on the card, but the West Course’s first par-5 plays much less than that downhill. It is reachable in two for the longer hitters.

The 5th is the second par-3 on the West, and measures in at over 200 yards, requiring an accurate tee shot with a long iron or hybrid. 6 and 7 are both par-4s, and both feature slight dog-legs to the right. The 8th has no danger on the tee shot, but the approach is played over water to a narrow green, with the closing hole on the front side being a long par-4 at the most southern tip of the course.

The back nine begins with a 184-yard par-3 with 11 then playing back up the slope that 7 came down. It dog-legs round to the left and plays uphill to a tight and sloping green. The 12th is the first of three par-5s on the back nine, and plays round to the left with a big and accurate drive required if you’re going for it in two. 13 is a long-par 4, with the 14th then being the final par-3 on the course.

The closing stretch on the West Course begins with 15, a par-4 that is almost 500 yards in length from the back tees. 16 is a shorter par-4, before the West Course ends with two par-5s. 17 measures in at more than 600 yards, and requires three solid shots to find the green, with the famous 18th winding round to the right, with the green guarded by a stream that has found plenty of golf balls in the past.

The Wentworth Club is situated in the English county of Surrey, just outside London’s ring road, the M25. Via public transport, the Wentworth Club is approximately an hour and 45 minutes from the centre of London, via South Western Railway.

For international visitors, the Wentworth Club is almost in perfect position, as it sits just eight miles from London Heathrow Airport. London Gatwick Airport is also within 40 miles from Wentworth.

There is no information about green fees at the Wentworth Club. This is due to the fact that it is a private club, so only members and their guests are allowed to play on any of the three courses.
