Great Northern is one of the best golfing venues in Scandinavia, thanks to a Nicklaus Design 18-hole golf course, which is complemented by a 9-hole Academy Course. There are also more than 65 rooms and suites available thanks to the brand-new hotel opening in 2026, along with the stunning Great Northern Spa on site as well.
The venue is the proud host of the first Nicklaus Design in Denmark, and it is an incredible first layout in the country. The 18-hole Great Northern Course can push to 7,400 yards from the tips, with the aim of hosting championship golf in the future. It is playable from the right tees, with a range of water hazards, island greens and elevated tee boxes to enjoy the views over towards the Great Belt Bridge. The venue also plays host to the 9-hole Academy Course, and the Great Northern Academy, which has stunning practice facilities, and offers coaching and tuition to members and guests alike.
Following a morning on the course, the Great Northern Spa is the perfect place to relax and unwind, with a glorious Aqua Spa experience available. The indoor pool and relaxation rooms are just part of the process, while there is also a yoga studio in the building (and classes throughout the week). Treatments and massages are also available in the Great Northern Spa, with qualified therapists on hand.
When it comes to accommodation, Great Northern is about to improve to another level! Up until the start of 2026, the resort only had 15 individual rooms, all of which stood on their own and overlooked the golf courses. However, 2026 will see the opening of the brand new hotel, with more than 50 rooms and suites adding to the accommodation offerings at the Danish resort.

Great Northern Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Resorts
Denmark’s First Nicklaus Design
The 18-hole layout at Great Northern can say with pride that it is the first course by the Nicklaus Design Group to be constructed in Denmark, and they have certainly started with a bang! From the tips, Great Northern plays around the 7,400-yard mark, making it more than tournament-worth should the DP World Tour or the Challenge Tour fancy changing their Danish venue...
Thankfully for us mere mortals, Nicklaus Design also made sure that the course was playable during their design process. There are several teeing options available to suit every level of golfer, and the course has successfully maximised the natural terrain and its features by incorporating interesting holes seamlessly in it. There are two sections to Great Northern; most of the highs are literally when the course is on the higher section, around a hill, where you can see the sea. And then there is a lower section among wetlands that is characterised by water features.
Through the middle part of the front nine is where the water comes into play, and it might well feel like it is all you can see for a while... There is water down the entirety of the left side on both 4 and 6, while the 5th has a hazard running down its right side. The 9th is arguably the signature hole on the Great Northern Course – a 200-yard par 3 that plays entirely over water, with only a bridge allowing you to get from the tee to the green.
Sand becomes the main problem for the majority of the back nine, with 12 and 13 having a total of 15 bunkers between them. Water takes back over for the closing stretch. The fairway is bisected by a stream on 15, with that same stream than running down the left side of 16 before cutting across to the opposite side of the fairway further down. The penultimate hole is another par 3 with water in front, and this is even longer than the 9th at 225 yards. The closing hole of the Great Northern Course is sublime. It is a par 5 of around 540 yards, with water all the way down the left, and sand on the right. However, a bit like the 9th, the putting surface is suspended in the water, as an island green. It is definitely a three-shotter, and a finishing hole where you will be very happy to run back to the clubhouse with a par on the card.
Academy Course
Great Northern is also home to a 9-hole Academy Course, which is the perfect complement to its bigger sibling. It is a short course at heart, with seven par 3s in the layout, but there is a 495-yard par 5 as well! In total, this par 30 course is a great place to warm up before taking the Great Northern Course, as well as being a good spot for those first learning the nuances of the game to take on to a real golf course.

Brand New Accommodation
Great Northern seems to only be getting better! 2026 will see the opening of a brand new hotel at the resort with more than 50 rooms. The new hotel has been constructed next to the driving range, and each one of the rooms will offer views looking out over either Kerteminde and to the Great Belt Bridge, or over the driving range and golf course.
It has been designed in a way that it won’t necessarily stand out from the other buildings and the clubhouse at the resort, at least not from the outside. The rooms and suites on the other hand, will be appointed at an incredible level of luxury. Each room is tailored to enhance the guests experience, and there will be an array of options when it comes to rooms and suites at the Great Northern Hotel.
The new hotel will be an extension of the accommodation that was already on offer at the Danish resort. There were already 15 rooms, all of which were their own individual building, that are tucked into the landscape. Ten sit to the left of the main building, overlooking the Academy Course, while the other five are near to the clubhouse building, and overlooking the 9th and 18th greens of the Great Northern Course.
Great Northern Spa
The Great Northern Spa is the perfect place for guests to unwind during their stay in Kerteminde. There are Aqua Spa experiences in the facility, thanks to the large indoor pool, and guests can book their own time to visit, with morning, lunchtime and afternoon sessions at the Great Northern Spa. There is also a range of treatments available, along with the use of a yoga studio.
Following the opening of the new hotel, the Great Northern Spa will also be upgraded and expanded, with additional treatment rooms and even a new Medical Spa concept, the first of its kind in the country.
