Halifax West End Golf Club

Founded in 1906, Halifax West End Golf Club is renowned as one of West Yorkshire's hidden gems. The course was originally opened as a nine-hole layout but, with help from world famous course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie, was extended to the full 18 holes in 1912. The course now measures just shy of 6,000 yards and offers superb drainage, meaning that it is open for play all year round. While not the longest by modern standards, the layout has a demanding par of 69 and features tight, tree-lined fairways as well as a range of sand and water hazards. These come into play as early as the third hole. Measuring 407 yards, the stroke index one par four is often played into a prevailing wind and requires a long, accurate drive. It is crucial to miss the fairway bunker to give yourself a decent chance of reaching the heavily-bunkered green. While there are many memorable holes on the front nine, the course gets better as it goes along, and you encounter many of the signature holes towards the end of your round.

The par-four 16th features a tough drive to a dogleg fairway guarded left and right by trees. The second shot is even trickier, though. Not only does the green lie uphill from the fairway, but also features water hazards to the front and right and a deep bunker that will catch any shots that drift too far left. Most visitors acknowledge that the 18th is the best hole on the course. The 411-yard par-four features a heavily sloping green and an uphill drive. Away from the course, the club boasts a well-stocked pro shop and function facilities capable of hosting weddings, funerals and any type of party. The venue now also offers stay-and-play packages in partnership with Holdsworth Hotel and Restaurant, the only four-star facility in Halifax.
