A Brief History of Inverallochy Golf Club

The history of Inverallochy Golf Club, like many venues on the NCG Top 100s: Scotland list, dates back to the 19th Century.

The club was originally founded in 1884, and was founded by the ‘Fisherman Golfers’ of Inverallochy. That version of the club was disbanded shortly before the Second World War.

The current iteration of the club was established in the 1950s, and the course has seen many improvements since, including the addition of more than 50 bunkers over the years.

As you might expect from a coastal golf course in Scotland, Inverallochy Golf Club is a traditional links-style layout. The par 67 course features just a single par 5 and six challenging par 3s, in a layout that stays short of 5,500 yards – even from the tips. However, don’t think it won’t be a challenge. Playing along the shore, the wind will be a factor, even with the most gentle of breezes...

The opening two holes play with the North Sea on their left. The 1st is a 380-yard par 4, and not only is the coastline on your left, but the two fairway bunkers on the right make for a very tight opening tee shot. Two more bunkers guard the putting surface. The first of the six par 3s comes early on. The 2nd is 203 yards from the tips, and although there are no bunkers, the green is very small. You move back inland with the 3rd, a slight dog-leg par. Avoid the two fairway bunkers on the inside corner, and it is another good chance for birdie at 375 yards. The 4th moves in the opposite direction, but once again, there is sand on the inside corner of the fairway Three more traps protect the green, including one tucked away to the right of the putting surface.

The 5th is a drivable par 4. At just 277 yards, some will take this on. However, the four bunkers surrounding the front of the green might make the decision to lay up a more obvious choice. Inverallochy’s only par 5 comes at the 6th hole. 470 yards, moving from left to right, this is another great scoring chance. Most will fancy their chances of reaching in two with a solid drive, but there is a burn running behind the green, which also has three traps in front. 198 yards lies in front of you on the 7th tee, playing over the burn that was round the back of the previous green. Sand sits either side of this green, making it look like an even smaller target. The 8th makes it back-to-back par 3s, but this one is much easier. It is only 140 yards, with the danger, once again, coming in the form of three bunkers.

The closing hole on the front side is one of the more difficult holes at Inverallochy, despite only being 335 yards. Four fairway bunkers and a road that runs down the entirety of the right side of the hole make the fairway much narrower, while the green is large and has seen many a three-putt. You won’t find an easier birdie chance than the 10th. A par 4, but one of only 235 yards. It is arrow straight, and all bar the shortest of hitters will play this as a par 3. The 11th is a long par 3, 199 yards to be precise. Only one bunker guards the surface, but it is tucked right in to the green, on its left side.

The North Sea is back in play on 12, one of the longest holes on the property. From the tips, the 12th is more than 430 yards, and it has a narrow fairway that really must be found. The green has two bunkers protecting it, and most will be coming in with a long iron or hybrid. 13 also plays with the coastline down its right side, but at 350 yards, it is a much easier par 4 to get through. A burn runs in front of the 14th green, making this 155-yard par 3 that bit more difficult. Take an extra club to make sure you cover the hazard, as there is more room behind the flag. 15 is another good birdie chance at just 315 yards from the tips. The fairway gets narrower the further down you hit your tee shot, and the road is in play on the left throughout, but the lack of distance means drive is not necessary off the tee.

The closing stretch at Inverallochy begins with another lengthy par 3 – the last of the six 3s on the course. It is 188 yards and with a burn running down the entirety of the left side of the hole. Two bunkers sit on the right of the green to add extra difficulty. Water runs across the 17th fairway on a diagonal angle, making it a very testing hole. It is 420 yards, and you must work out what the carry is on the right side of the fairway, as that is the shorter distance to cover the hazard. The closing hole has two bunkers in the centre of the fairway that need to be avoided, with two more by the green. If those bunkers are found, a par is no easy feat.
