Leeds (Cobble Hall) Golf Club

The oldest trophy in professional golf began here when the Leeds Cup was first held in 1902. The club had already been open six years and, as you might expect of a track which opened in the 1800s, the course therefore has a wonderfully mature feel to it – as well as a very tranquil one. You would never suspect that you were just four miles from the bustling vibrancy of Leeds city centre. Cobble Hall, as it is often known, begins fairly gently but really kicks into life at the 7th which is one of the best looking par 4s in the county. The green is two tiered and a par here is well earned. By the 10th and 11th, a long 4 and the first of two par 5s, you will likely have hit all your clubs in the bag – such is the mixture of challenges on this well-maintained course – and it also improves visually with every hole. Indeed, the move to back nine perhaps offers even more variety with only two successive holes having the same par.

The yardage might only be a little over 6,000 yards but, with the par at just 69, playing to your handicap is very acceptable. Ignore the scorecard as the 15th plays nothing like its yardage of 172. Named ‘Tribulation’ it is uphill all the way with trees left and right. Going long is better than short though you will likely be hoping to control a long iron or fairway wood. Four is perfectly respectable, three is outstanding from the back tees. This is the hole for which the course is most remembered by visiting golfers. At 500 yards there is a chance for a few to get up in two at the 14th and there is a sense that you can open your shoulders from the tee. The approach will need to clear a bunker set in a small hill and, from there, the land runs down towards the green.
