Mold Golf Club was first founded in 1909, and after a couple of other locations, settled on its current home around a century ago.  

 

Its home in Pantymwyn is in the shadows of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and has a range of gorgeous floral delights.  

 

After the course’s extension in the late 1970s, it has turned into a terrific 18-hole layout. It is not the longest, but there is plenty of danger around.

The history of Mold Golf Club features three different venues, before the club settled on its current location in Pantymwyn in the 1920s. 

 

The club was originally founded in 1909, following a four-year spell at the Hafod Golf Links. From there, the club spent two decades in Padeswood before the flooding of the River Alyn. 

 

After moving to its current location, it was not until the late 1970s that the course was extended into an 18-hole layout, the same routing that golfers play to this day.  

Mold Golf Club is an uplands parkland course, which at times hits as high as 850 feet above sea level. The course offers incredible views of the Welsh countryside, whilst lying in the shadow of Moel Famau in the Clwydian Range. The Par 68 course is only 5,555 yards long and features two par 5s and six par 3s, and all bar three holes run in a north-south direction.  

 

At just 325 yards, you might be forgiven for thinking the opening hole at Mold is a nice, easy start. However, the tee shot requires accuracy, while the green is raised so chipping on to the surface is more difficult. The 2nd features a large oak tree in the middle of the fairway, while the 3rd is the first of the six par 3s on the card. 4 is a short par 4 at just 300 yards from the tips, and one that could be seen as drivable for the longer hitters. However, with plenty of trees around, playing safe might be the better option. 

 

The 5th features a narrow fairway, but longer hitters can open up the green with a solid drive, while the 6th is the signature par 3 at Mold. The downhill short hole is played from an elevated tee which can sometimes be up to two clubs less. 7 is one of just two par 5s on the property, and it is a proper one at 525 yards from the tips. The fairway slopes down towards the green, allowing for some to go for it with their second shot. 8 is a short par 4, while the front nine closes with another par 3. The 9th is only 150 yards long, but the green is well protected, both by bunkers and the elements.  

 

The back nine begins with one of the hardest holes at Mold, the par 4 10th. Both the fairway and green run from left to right, so aim down the left side with both shots. 11 is the longest par 3 on the course, and although there are no bunkers and no real danger, the distance makes it a tough hole. The 12th features internal out of bounds, while 13 has one of the smallest greens at Mold. This par 3 is a tough one from 170 yards out.  

 

The closing stretch begins with two tough par 4s. 14 is the first par 4 over 400 yards, while the 15th is the hardest hole on the course. At 463 yards from the whites (it plays as a par 5 from the yellows), navigating 15 is no mean feat. At just 137 yards, the 16th might seem easy, but everything slopes from back to front, so anything short of the flag, but on the green, is perfect. 17 is a straightforward par 4, while the closing hole at Mold is a short par 5 at just 485 yards. However, don’t go long with your approach, as being short is the best miss on 18. 

Where is Mold Golf Club located?  
Mold Golf Club is in northeastern Wales, close to the Welsh border with England. The border is just 12 miles from Mold Golf Club, while the course sits around three miles from the town of Mold. The A494, which runs around the south side of Mold, runs through to Queensferry.  

 

Mold does not have its own train station. Instead, the nearest railway station is in Buckley, just shy of ten miles to the east of the golf club. Buckley sits on the Borderlands line which runs between Wrexham in Wales and Bidston in England. As with all the northern venues on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, the two closest international airports are on the other side of the border. Both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are within an hour’s drive from the golf club, with the latter being the busiest airport in the United Kingdom, outside of the city of London.  

What golf facilities does Mold Golf Club offer?  
Along with the 18-hole golf course, Mold Golf Club is also home to practice facilities, which sit in the southeastern corner of the property. There is a small driving range with target greens to aim at. There is also a putting green by the clubhouse.

The price of a green fee at Mold Golf Club changes throughout the year, depending on the season. It is also different depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend.
