Located in the town of Barry in Angus, Panmure sits in somewhat of a golfing paradise on the coast of the River Tay and North Sea.

The club dates back to 1845, making it one of the oldest in the country. It is a traditional links golf course, with both Old Tom Morris and James Braid as the men behind the layout of the track.

Even Ben Hogan, following his only visit to these shores, had his say in the design of the course, with the 6th hole now being named after the great man.

The course has hosted many international and amateur competition during its 180-year history, including both Regional and Final Qualifying for the Open Championship, and the R&A Girls Amateur Championship.

A Brief History of Panmure Golf Club

Panmure Golf Club can claim to be one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1845. Allan Robertson and Alexander Pirie were the men to design the original 9-hole layout, with the course eventually being extended to 18 holes some 35 years later.

Like all courses, Panmure has seen changes over the years. Five-time Open Champion James Braid laid out proposals to change the majority of holes on the course in 1922. The last major change saw the re-sighting of the 14th green.

Prior to winning his sole Open Championship in 1953, in what was his only trip to Scotland, Ben Hogan practiced at Panmure. He spent two weeks acclimatising to British links conditions, as well as the smaller ball used in British golf. The 6th hole at Panmure is named Hogan, and there is even a pot bunker which he suggested be added to the hole.

Panmure has been the home to several prestigious tournaments over the years, including being a venue for Final Qualifying of the Open Championship, Senior Open Championship and the AIG Women's Open. The Amateur Championship, R&A Girls Amateur Championship and British Senior Amateur Championship have all been played at Panmure over the years.

Panmure is, as you would expect, a true links test of golf. It is not the longest course in the world, stretching to just 6,550 yards even from the tips, but this par 70 has plenty of challenges along with its scoring opportunities.

The opening 300-yard par 4 allows for confident players to have a crack at the green, but for us mere mortals, a lay-up to the right distance, especially with out of bounds down the right hand side, is the right play. The 2nd, a par 5, is reachable in two for the longer hitters, but out of bounds looms for the errant shot once again. Two tough and long par 4s follow, with danger on either side of the fairways. Both also have OOB down their right sides, like the opening couple of holes, with plenty of sand in your eyeline as well.

The 5th is the opening par 3 on the course at Panmure, and it is only 144 yards from the back tees. It is not long, but there are plenty of bunkers to catch an errant shot. ‘Hogan’ is Panmure’s signature hole, and the Stroke Index 1. It is around 420 yards from the tips, and the further you hit your tee shot, the narrower the strip of short grass becomes. If your tee shot doesn't end up on the right side of the fairway, then you might have a semi-blind shot into the green, which is guarded by the bunker the great man told the club to add in for extra protection.

At 450 yards, the 7th is the longest par 4 on the front nine, but there is space out to the right thanks to the adjoining fairway with the 6th. Just one bunker protects the putting surface, which is large and round. The 8th plays as a slight dog-leg right, with a generous strip of fairway to find with your drive. The front nine closes with another par 3. At 180 yards, it requires a accurate shot to find the putting surface.

The 10th is the hardest hole on the back nine, with blind shots and bunkers towards the green. The 11th is then the easiest hole on the property, a 168 yard par 3. It has a flat green, but there are bunkers and grassy knolls for even the smallest misses. The 12th then features a meandering burn and an upturned green, making par a good score. Another burn comes into play on 13, this time one that runs straight across the fairway around the 250-yard mark, so keep your tee shot short of it.

The 14th is the back nine’s par 5. It is the longest hole on the course at 533 yards from the tips, and could just be reachable for the bigger hitters. However, with OOB down the right side thanks to the railway line, and a dog-leg left to deal with for the second shot, it might be worth laying up to the right distance. The 15th is the last of the par 3s at Panmure, and easily the longest. It pushes to more than 230 yards from the tips, and with six bunkers in play, it is a very difficult hole to get through unscathed.

A trio of par 4s bring you back to the clubhouse at Panmure, starting with the shortest of those at 16. It is 375 yards, and if you can avoid the fairway bunkers off the tee, there is a scoring opportunity to take here. 17 pushes past 400 yards, and moves slightly from left to right, with fields on the right of this hole causing an OOB problem as well. The closing hole at Panmure is the longest par 4 on the course. It plays slightly longer than its carded 460 yards as well, thanks to the change in direction, moving from left to right. The majority will aim their tee shot out to the left, making the approach shot into this green even longer.

Our Panellists Notes for 2026

Danie Ferry: As goles should be. The opening and closing holes could be stronger. Feeling of exquisite, traditional golf from 3-16. The greens were great throughout.

Peter Rudd: A course of real charm and character the merits of which have never seemed fully recognised.

Dove Jones: A worthy next door neighbour to Carnoustie and should be on more itineraries.

David Walker: Three golfers have influenced the links at Panmure - Old Tom, James Braid and Ben Hogan with the 6th described by the latter as the perfect golf hole. The other 17 aren't too bad either.

Michael Verity: Quiet opening and ending but the middle holes are thoroughly compelling.
