PlayGolf Colchester Golf Club
It is often difficult to justify spending a million pounds, but when the owners PlayGolf Colchester wander their newly refurbished course, they must be pretty happy with the results.
In 2007 renowned architect Jonathan Gaunt was called in by the club, formerly known as Lexden Wood, to oversee extensive work in improving the par-70 layout.
The result is something quite special. His team have added new greens and tees; as well as over 80 bunkers and water that now comes into play on 5 holes.
The condition of the course has also improved dramatically over the last three years and the greens are now among the best in Essex.
The 5,895-yard course is very much a parkland track to the eye, but it often plays more like an inland links, with firm and running fairways.
The 5,895-yard course is very much a parkland track to the eye, but it often plays more like an inland links, with firm and running fairways. You score should be made over the par-36 front nine, which has two par 5s and two par 3s. The par-34 back nine has no longer holes and so accuracy is the key for picking-up shots on the way home. PlayGolf Colchester can also boast a second nine-hole academy course, with holes ranging from 60 to 90-yards, ideal for the beginner or those just looking to fine-tune their wedge play. Also on-site is one of Essex’s biggest American Golf stores, offering a try before you buy service on the club’s driving range and custom fitting bay. The store is open seven days a week, from 7:30am – 9:00pm during the week and 7:00am – 7:00pm at weekends. PlayGolf Colchester is perfectly located just one mile from Colchester Train Station, two miles from Colchester Town Centre and half a mile from the A12.
