Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts
Rankings
17th
Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is one of several Italian venues to claim a spot on the NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts list. It is also one of a number of venues located in the region of Tuscany. The venue is blessed with a glorious golf course on the rolling hills, accommodation in the form of suites and villas, and a sublime wellness facility.
Tom Weiskopf, winner of the 1973 Open Championship at Royal Troon, was the man behind the design of the 18-hole layout at The Club at Castiglion del Bosco, one that only opened in 2012. The golf course also has a signature 19th hole, to allow any drawn matches to have one final chance at being settled. It is a stunning little par 3, and a great finish to a round at CdB.
Along with golf, there are also plenty of other outdoor activities, including biking and hiking excursions, while the resort also has a wellness facility. The Spa at Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is the perfect place for guests to relax and unwind following a round of golf. Massages and treatments are available, along with the use of the steam bath, sauna and all the other facilities.
Suites and villas are the accommodation offerings at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, with more than 50 options available. There are a wide range of suites to choose from, from Junior Suites up to the two-bedroom Casa del Vescovo and Casa Fontaccia. 11 villas, all one-of-a-kind, round out the accommodation choices, sleeping up to 12 people.

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco Overview | NCG Top 100: European Golf Resorts
The Club at Castiglion del Bosco
Unlike many of the venues on the NCG Top 100s: European Resorts list, the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is only home to the one course, but it is located in a stunning setting. Sitting in the Tuscan hills, the CdB as it is also known, is Italy’s only private golf club, reserved exclusively for members of the club, or for guests staying at the Rosewood.
The course was designed by 1973 Open Champion Tom Weiskopf, and it is his only golf course design in Continental Europe. The layout at CDB only opened in 2012, which also makes it one of the youngest courses on the list. The course blends itself nicely into the rolling hills of the Tuscan environment, and it includes one of the longest par 5s on the continent.
“The rolling hillsides provided a perfect palette to lay out the golf course” - Tom Weiskopf
The par 5 13th can stretch to more than 680 yards, but it does play slightly downhill, so you might not need to hit three woods to have a chance of making it in regulation. Don’t worry, the other three par 5s on the layout are much friendlier, all in and around the 520-540 yard-mark. Of the short holes, it is the 8th which catches the eye. It is the shortest hole on the property at just shy of 170 yards but is almost surrounded by sand, and they are not small traps either!
However, it is the last challenge which is perhaps the most unusual. Akin to Payne’s Valley - one of Tiger Woods’ course designs - The Club at Castiglion del Bosco has its own 19th hole that is used to settle matches. It is a short par 3, with two bunkers on the left side of the putting surface. This little gem is called ‘Brunello’, named so after the region the course and resort is set in.

The Spa at Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco
The central part of the wellbeing offering at the resort is The Spa at Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco. The wellness facility at the Italian resort has a steam bath and a sauna, along with a wide range of treatments on offer, given by qualified therapists.
For those that like to be outdoors, there is a 10 x 20 metre pool which offers incredible views, looking out over the town of Montalcino and the forest. There are also fitness classes, yoga and hiking excursions to get the heart rate up as well!
The Castiglion del Bosco Winery
The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco has its own on-site winery, thanks to its location in the Tuscan countryside. The winery at the venue is one of the most historic producers of wine in the region.
Thanks to the size of the estate - some 2,000 hectares - there is plenty of space for the vineyards. There are two distinct vineyards to provide different types of wines. The winery also hosts seminars for guests of the resort, along with the annual harvest, which has become a traditional two-day event.
Stunning Suites and Villas
The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco has a sublime range of suites and villas to provide its guests with a wide range of accommodation. There are 42 suites at the resort, starting with a variety of Junior Suites that provide luxury and comfort all in one. The Borgo, Terrace and CDB Suites are also one-bedroom, with the latter providing the utmost luxury.
There are then a pair of two-bedroom suites - the Casa del Vescovo and the Casa Fontaccia, both of which are private and sit at the heart of the resort. The villas at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco are all crafted from the original farmhouses that were built on the land in the 17th and 18th Century.
The villas at the resort can sleep anywhere from six to 12 people, and each comes with its own private pool, terrace and large garden. They also come with a 4x4 vehicle for guests to use during their stay at the Italian venue. The Villa Agresto is the newest of the accommodation options, and also the largest. It sits amongst the vineyards and near the woodlands.
