A Brief History of Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest was founded in the late 19th Century, with the club then moving to its present location in 1912, prior to the First World War.

Harry Colt laid out the original course at the new location, with five-time Open Champion James Braid being brought in during the 1920s to redesign the layout at Sherwood Forest. That 18-hole lay-out remains relatively unchanged to this day.

Since the turn of the millennium, Sherwood Forest has played host to a number of prestigious tournaments, including the Brabazon Trophy. The English Seniors Championship, English Senior Women's Championship and the English Boys' Championship have also been held at the club.

The par 71 layout clocks in at over 6,800 yards, making it on the lengthy side. The changes made by James Braid in the 1920s set the course out in this manner, with several long par 4s. There are four par 3s and three par 5s on the Sherwood Forest course. Trees, heather, gorse and the little matter of 100 bunkers… It’s a true test of your golfing ability.

The first three holes on the Championship layout all measure less than 400 yards, and provide opportunities for you to go under par early on. The par 3 4th, clocking in at 196 yards, plays with the clubhouse in the background. It plays downhill, so less club is required, but it is a gorgeous hole early on in the round. The 5th is the first par 5 on the property, and at less than 500 yards, it is reachable in two for the big hitters.

An accurate tee shot is required on the 6th, the hardest hole on the front nine. Bunkers line the right side of the fairway, and then guard a two-tiered green. The 7th is the shortest hole on the course at 131 yards, but it could be a card wrecker. The front side concludes with two long holes. The 8th is a par 5 that provides an opportunity providing you hit a good drive, before the 478 yard par 4 9th, where you will be happy to come away with a par.

The back nine begins with a 179 yard par 3 that plays much longer than it says on the card due to the prevailing wind being in your face. Sherwood Forest’s ‘Amen Corner’ then takes off from the 11th with a 460-yard par 4. What follows are three more pa -4s that all measure over 400 yards, with the 14th being the hardest hole on the course.

The closing stretch at Sherwood Forest begins with a 200 yard par 3, followed by the last par 5 on the property. The 17th features two cross bunkers, one at 180 and one at 310, with the majority of players hitting in between the two. The closing hole then plays back towards the clubhouse, playing down the slope. Miss the fairway on 18 and a par is almost a miracle.

Our Panellists Notes for 2025

Sean Arble: There is an undeniable grandeur to many of the holes which should slap a smile to any golfer's face

Steve Carroll: Firm and fast running with brutal rough. Sherwood Forest is both impressive and challenging

Greg Webber: A terrific playing experience. The stretch from the 9th to the 15th is particularly demanding

David Walker: A very gentle opening hole but the challenge builds and after the 8th come a succession of 400-plus-yard par 4s
