Tandridge Golf Club is one of several stunning golf clubs in Surrey, and celebrated its centenary year in 2024.

The club was first founded in the 1920s, with the great Harry Colt – of Swinley Forest and St George's Hill fame – being brought in to design the course.

The course remains pretty similar to its original design, winding through tree-lined fairways with plenty of bunkers to keep you on your toes.

A Brief History of Tandridge Golf Club

Tandridge Golf Club was originally founded in the 1920s, and Harry Colt was the man brought in to design the new 18-hole golf course.

Unfortunately, freak weather has been the cause of damage on more than one occasion at Tandridge. Firstly, a hurricane swept through southern England in the late 1980s, taking out 2,000 trees.

Then, in 2024, during the club’s centenary year, a devastating thunderstorm caused damage to the course – especially to some of the older bunkers. The club had to use the next winter to bring them back to their glorious best.

Once upon a time Tandridge boasted over 300 bunkers, which gives you an idea of the legendary Harry Colt’s attention to detail when designing courses. Now, following a major upgrade over recent years to reinstate the Colt principles, there are still plenty which provide challenge, strategy and architectural splendour. Like so many of the great Surrey layouts, Tandridge benefits from firm, springy fairways that make it playable throughout the winter, fast-running in the summer and a delight to hit irons from at any time of the year. From the back tees it measures a shade over 6,500 yards but a variety of tee placements mean it is enjoyable for all.

There are two quite distinct loops of nine which offer the golfer a complete contrast with something new on offer from every tee. The holes on the front nine are strategic with some demanding doglegs, and it begins and ends with par 5s. It is a gentle start at Tandridge, with the opening hole being just 475 yards from the tips, and a possible eagle opportunity for some to get underway. From there, it gets tougher...

Both the 2nd and 5th are par 4s of more than 440 yards in length. The former of those is a sharp dog-leg right, and one where finding the fairway is crucial to have a shot at making the green in regulation. The 5th turns slightly in the opposite direction, but the drive must avoid five fairway bunkers. In between those is the slightly shorter 3rd and the opening par 3 at Tandridge – the 150-yard 4th. Although short, there are six bunkers surrounding the putting surface, with the green sitting on a diagonal angle from the tee.

6 and 7 can both be seen as birdie opportunities. The former is 360 yards and if you lay up before the bunkers, there is a good chance to hit the green. The 7th is only a click over 300 yards long, so some might fancy taking it on with the driver. There are five greenside bunkers so the safe play might be to try and find the fairway before then knocking it on with a wedge. The 8th is another tricky short hole, before the front nine closes with the longest hole on the course. 9 is more than 500 yards, but if you can avoid the singular fairway bunker, then there is definitely a chance of making it onto the putting surface with your second shot.

The more undulating back nine offers thrilling twists and turns along with views that are spectacular and panoramic. It begins with two of the toughest holes on the closing half of Tandridge. The line for your drive on the 10th is to aim at the two cross bunkers, but make sure you don’t reach them. 11 is a tricky dog-leg right, with a fairway that pinches in the further you hit your tee shot. 12 is an even sharper dog-leg in the same direction. The play is to the corner, unless you feel confident enough to cut one around the corner.

The 13th is a cracking one-shotter with a stand of pines to the left, bunkers galore, a steep bank down to the right and glorious views back towards the clubhouse. It is 223 yards from the back tee, making it at least a long iron, if not a hybrid or fairway wood for most. The 14th is the club’s signature hole and is played from an extremely elevated tee to a picturesque valley way below. Crossing a burn, there is a gentle climb up the other side to a green beyond a cluster of cross bunkers.

The closing stretch begins with the last short hole – the 180-yard 15th. A narrow green is guarded by three small bunkers, and although not the longest, it is a tricky hole. 16 is another dog-leg right, and for some, it will be drivable. It is only 295 yards, and with a small fade off the tee, the green is within reach. 17 and 18 are two tough holes to bring you to a close at Tandridge with the closing hole pushing past 410 yards. If you find the fairway, the approach is played to another green that sits on a diagonal angle to you. Five bunkers guard the putting surface, and it is a high-quality end to your round at this Surrey venue.
