Upton-by-Chester Golf Club

Founded in 1934, Upton-by-Chester lies just a couple of minutes from the town centre and is one of the most popular golfing destinations in Cheshire. This is, in no small part, due to the inclusive atmosphere at the club where visitors, golfing societies and corporate groups are welcomed throughout the year. To cater for these demands, the venue offers a range of first-class facilities. Three conference rooms are available for hire, while the club's modern restaurant offers attractive views across the golf course and a menu to suit all tastes and budgets. The 100-seat facility is also available for weddings, birthdays and anniversary parties. The main attraction, however, is the mature 18-hole parkland layout. Originally opened as a nine-hole course, the track has changed dramatically over the years and now measures 5,807 yards.

While not the longest by modern standards, the course boasts a demanding par of 69 and features tight, tree-lined fairways that test the accuracy of your drive, rather than the length. It is also heavily bunkered, while the greens are constructed to USGA specifications to ensure that they remain playable all year round. These challenges become apparent as early as the par-four second hole. Measuring 410 yards, the hole features a slightly dog-leg fairway and two bunkers at the front of the green. Depending on pin position, the approach shot can be very difficult here. A similar test awaits at the 14th hole, which is ranked as the most difficult on the layout. The 401-yard par-four boasts a sharply dog-leg, tree-lined fairway and three bunkers to the front-right of the green that justify the stroke index of one. If your card lies in tatters after the 14th, then the signature 15th is sure to lift your spirits. The picturesque par-three is played over a pond and features a bunker to the front-left of the green. The club lies close to the city of Chester and is easily accessible from the M56, M53 or A41.
