Located a few miles from Rotherham, Wath is good example of a parkland layout where patience and course management can be rewarded with a low score. At less than 6,100 yards and with five par 3s it may seem like an easy course from the card, but underestimate Wath and your day may soon be ruined. The South Yorkshire course is a reasonably flat layout, dotted with a mixture of man-made and natural hazards and unlimited golf can be purchased in 2012 at under £40 for the day. Other than the five par 3s, which all have an excellent use of water and bunkering, there are also three par 5s and 10 long and short par 4s. These holes are crossed by dykes and dotted with copses, meaning positioning and patience is paramount. To complement the course, Wath offers a practice area, complete with putting green, bunker and chipping area. After your round, relax in the fine clubhouse and soak up the warm, friendly atmosphere.

Birdie chance The 248 yard par-4 6th is the best of multiple birdie chances. If you go for the green from the tee there is more room right of the green than is visible. Those who choose to lay-up must be well placed to avoid the fairway bunkers. Bogey chance The 448 yard par-4 16th isn’t stroke index one, but is arguably the trickier of the long par 4s. To have any chance of hitting the green in two, finding the fairway is crucial even for the longer hitters. If you navigate this aspect successfully you must still find the green, which is well protected by bunkers.  Signature hole Wath’s signature hole is most definitely the 15th, a 165-yard par 3 over a crystal clear pond.  If you pass the test on this daunting tee shot and are met by the welcome sight of your ball touching down on the dance floor then you job is by no means done. The three-tiered green means you are likely to be left with work to do with the flat stick.
