Weston Turville Golf Club | NCG Top 100s
Established in 1973, this fine-looking course is renowned for its views of the Chiltern Hills which surround it.
It measures just over 6,000 yards – so is not the longest course by modern standards – but its par of 69 makes finishing in the red an extremely difficult task.
Couple the low par with an abundance of expertly-positioned water hazards and you have a course that is ready to pounce upon any wayward shot.
The greens are surrounded by cleverly-placed bunkers that will happily swallow your misses, and the dancefloors themselves are renowned for their pristine condition and the subtle breaks that prove tricky to read.
Wayward driving can also land you in trouble as thick rough lines the fairways and makes keeping the ball on the firm, fast greens very tough.
Another hole worth pointing out is the par-4 5th, which has a severe dog-leg that you must play twice to fully appreciate.
The club, which is located two miles from the centre of Aylesbury and just an hour from the capital, also has a reputation for its food, which is of a high standard.
Finally, contrary to what you might expect, its proximity to the Chiltern Hills does not make it a hard-to-walk track – quite the opposite in fact.
Couple the low par with an abundance of expertly-positioned water hazards and you have a course that is ready to pounce upon any wayward shot.
Top Holes by David Allen, club secretary:
6th, 166 yards, par 3 The club’s signature hole, the par-3 6th is not long on paper but plays much further due to the elevated green. There is water in front of the tee, which is a daunting sight for most players, and two pot bunkers – one at each side of the green. The green falls sharply off the back, which presents a real challenge for an up-and-down. 15th, 428 yards, par 4 According to the Stroke Index, the hardest hole on the course. This hole features a 90˚ dogleg to the left and has a well-bunkered green with water, too. The approach is still very difficult, even after a good drive, so it is always difficult to make par here. The best play here is to hit towards the fairway marker, which leaves a 180-yard approach. 16th, 178 yards, par 3 One of the course’s best par 3s, the 16th is on the longer side and requires a really accurate shot as it is played through a gap in the trees. The green is two tiered and therefore has a large slope that can be hard to judge. The best miss is short as anything right, left, or long leaves a very hard up and down.Course Reviews
