Windyhill Golf Club
Set at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills near Glasgow, Windyhill Golf Club is renowned as one of the best golf courses west of the city.
The club boasts a well-stocked pro shop and hosts a variety of events, but the main attraction is the 18-hole championship course.
Measuring 6,154 yards off the white tees, the par-71 layout is a challenging design that features a range of different tests.
The front nine starts in relatively simple fashion, but arguably gets better as it goes along. Indeed, the par-three seventh hole is regarded by some as the best on the course.
Known as “Port Lucy”, it requires a long fairway wood to reach the small green guarded by a variety of hazards. Bunkers feature on both sides, while a burn and an out of bounds stretch on the left, and rocks to the right, will catch anything wayward. Walking away with par might feel like a birdie here.
The par-five eighth offers a real birdie opportunity, which may come as a relief once you step onto the ninth tee. The 414-yard par-four is known as “Perfection” and, as the name suggests, making par here might require something special.
Measuring 6,154 yards off the white tees, the par-71 layout is a challenging design that features a range of different tests. The green sits 100 feet above the tee and is protected by a range of craters, the largest of which rests by the left of the green. Five is no bad score here. Windyhill’s back nine starts in similarly testing fashion. The 433-yard par-four 12th hole is set on three levels and should be played in the natural stages as set out in front of you. Five is generally considered a good score here, even for the most experienced golfers. The 14th is Windyhill’s signature hole. Set in between a rocky outcrop on the right and a burn and out of bounds on the left, this delightful par-three looks spectacular in summer time. The club lies just eight miles north-west of Glasgow and can be easily reached via the A81.
