Woolston Manor Golf Club
When a nine-time Major winner pays you a compliment it is something to be very proud of – so small wonder Woolston Manor were delighted to hear Gary Player describe it as one of the best new courses he had ever played.
A respected course designer in his own right, Player was hugely impressed with this Essex venue that was created by Neil Coles MBE and David Williams back in 1994.
Since then it has grown into a championship course that features generous teeing areas, dramatic bunkers and water on no fewer than 12 of its holes.
The land on which Woolston Manor sits was once owned by William the Conqueror and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1085.
Today it is a 200-acre oasis of picturesque Essex countryside that borders Epping Forest and incorporates the many natural features of the land, in particular the River Roding which meanders throughout the course and repeatedly comes into play.
Having been built to USGA specifications with a state-of-the-art irrigation system, it is regarded as one of the finest courses in the south east of England and has hosted a number of prestigious regional tournaments.
But the impressive facilities do not end with the picturesque and challenging course as Woolston Manor also doubles up as an ideal meeting, conference or even wedding venue.

Top Holes by Bradley Preston, director of golf:
12th 563 yards, par 5 This formidable par 5 requires a straight drive to avoid the ditch that runs along the right side of the fairway to set up a second shot that must carry the fairway bunker. This should leave 100 yards and allow you to make a controlled approach to a tricky green. 13th 342 yards, par 4 This majestic par 4 has a low Stroke Index for a reason, mostly because the fairway is surrounded by water meaning a well-placed tee shot is crucial. You should also try to leave yourself a full shot into the green which must also carry the water. 18th 342 yards, par 4 A fantastic finishing hole that can be rewarding or penal in equal measure. Select the correct club on the tee and you should be left with anything from an iron to a wedge to the green. But be sure you have the correct yardage for this approach as anything short will find a watery grave in the lake.Course Reviews
