Ramside Hall Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts
36 Championship Holes
Ramside Hall, like many of the venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Resorts list, is home to two 18-hole golf courses. The resort has the Prince Bishops’ Course and the Cathedral Course, both of which were designed by Jonathan Gaunt.
Prince Bishops’ Course
The Prince Bishops’ Course is the older of the two layouts at Ramside Hall, and was named after the clergymen who ruled from Durham Castle in the 11th Century. There are no fewer than 16 water hazards on the Prince Bishops’ Course, but there are also a number of driveable par 4s for you to gain any shots back.
The 6,850-yard layout begins with a pair of good scoring chances as it gets underway with back-to-back par 5s. Playing as a dog-leg right, and with water down the left side, the opener is only a good scoring chance if you can keep your opening tee shot down the middle. Again, there is water down the left on 2, but for most, carrying it should not cause any issues. From there, it is just sand that might give you a headache at the green.
The 3rd is the shortest hole on the course at just 124 yards, and the first of a group of stunning par 3s. The 7th is not much further – just 133 yards – but it plays over water to an incredibly shallow green. If you enjoyed short par 3s on the front nine, you’ve got two long ones to play on the back. They come at 10 and 15, and both are more than 200 yards from the back tees. The fromer has a quartet of bunkers in front of the putting surface, while the approach on the 15th is all carry over water, but with OOB to the back right of the green.
The final two holes provide a stern test to finish. 17 is a 550-yard par 5 that plays as a dog-leg right around internal out of bounds. The line is left centre off the tee, to provide yourself with the best angle towards the green. The trouble doesn’t stop there, though, as there are thick trees and bunkers to contend with. Like much of the course, the 18th also features water. It is a 435-yard par 4 from the back, with two large hazards down the right side. A par on the last of the Prince Bishops’ is a great score.
Cathedral Course
The Cathedral Course, named after the nearby Durham Cathedral, was also designed by Jonathan Gaunt, and is one of the youngest golf courses in the country. Gaunt has affectionately called holes 11-14 ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner’ in a nod to Augusta, and the par 3 12th bares more than a resemblance to its Georgian counterpart.
Before you get there though, you start with a testing par 5 – one of 565 yards from the tips. It is a dog-leg right, and requires a solid drive down the left side to open up a view of the green. The 5th is also a tough par 5, with a stream running down the entirety of the left side of the hole. Like the opener, it pushes well past the 550-yard mark. A par on 5 is a very good score.
At 189 yards, the 12th is longer than the famous par 3 at Augusta, but Sherburn Beck, which runs in front of the green, will be in your eyeline throughout. The other short hole on the back side is the finisher. From the back tees, it pushes past 220 yards. 180 of that is carry over the pond that sits in front of the green, on a hole where it is better to go long than it is to be short.

Sublime Stays
The Ramside Hall Hotel, and its other buildings, really does offer something for everyone. There are Classic, Deluxe and Premier Rooms, all of which come in both Double and Twin form. The latter offering also comes in Family shape, with space for four. The Junior Suite, Celebration Suite and Presidential Suite offer the utmost luxury in the hotel at the northeastern venue.
The venue also has The Farmhouse on site – a 19th Century building that can sleep up to ten across five bedrooms. The building also has a raised patio area which overlooks the 11th hole of the Cathedral Course. Guests of The Farmhouse can also use the hotel facilities, including the pool.
For something completely different, Ramside Hall also offers a set of luxurious Treehouses which sit in the woodlands next to the final fairway of the Prince Bishops Course. They are all three-bedroom properties, but can be rented out as one- or two-bedrooms as well, depending on the size of the party.
