Sperone

Sperone

It looks like belongs in the Indian Ocean or the Caribbean. But these flawless turquoise waters aren't lapping the coast of Mauritius or Jamaica, the land you see is Corsica in the Mediterranean.

The course in question is Sperone, and it is among the 100 finest in Continental Europe – with its breathtaking Pebble Beach-esque location the prime reason.

The front nine weaves inland, a steady warm-up for what is to follow on the back nine, which for five holes from the 12th to the 16th is breathtaking.

The 16th is widely regarded as the best of the lot, an all-world par 5 that, like 13 and 15, hugs the edge of the bluffs a la Old Head of Kinsale.

The Robert Trent Jones course opened in the 90s and has lots of accommodation in and around nearby Bonifacio in the southern tip of the island.

It is quite a long walk in the sun across undulating terrain with plenty of elevation changes, but it just means you will be especially easy for something cool and refreshing after the finish to one of Europe's most dazzling experiences. Chris Bertram
