Tynemouth Golf Club

Tynemouth is pleasantly situated on the outskirts of the picturesque seaside village which carries same name.   The course was designed by Willie Park in 1913 and benefits from excellent drainage – making for an ideal all year round venue. Venture to Tynemouth and you will find firm, good playing surfaces.   Although not physically demanding the course provides a strong challenge for both low and high handicap players.   The par 70, 18-hole course offers a wide array of hazards to negotiate over its 6,359 yards. In addition its easy walking nature makes it perfect for golfers of all ages and abilities.   The 1st is a very challenging hole, requiring a good straight drive to set up a shot to a green that has a narrow entrance. Escaping with a par here is a good outcome and one which will set your round up nicely. The remainder of the front nine offers an interesting mix of well designed holes which set up for good scoring. The first par five comes at the 8th, where long straight hitting is likely to be rewarded with a birdie opportunity provided you stay clear of the water hazards down the left hand side of the fairway and successfully negotiate the protective bunkers which surround the green. If you are able to play the 12th 13th and 14th in par you will be very pleased as this stretch of the course is affectionately known by members as 'Amen Corner'.

The 11th is a deceptively delightful par 3. The green is surrounded by bunkers and at first glance it seems that the front bunker sits tight to the green. Further analysis will however show that there is a stretch of about 20 yards beyond the bunker, meaning that taking an extra club often reaps rewards. The 12th is stroke index 1 and is a long and challenging hole. Longer hitters will find that the fairway narrows at about 240 yards from the tee, with a fairway bunker to the left and trees to the right forming a bottle neck. Two more long, accurate shots are required to find the green, and escaping with par here is a good result.. The par-4 14th is true dog leg which shapes left to right to make a 90˚ angle. A drive up the middle – around 220 to 250 yards – will leave you a clear shot to the green. Bunkers right and left guard the green and if you are able to play the 12th 13th and 14th in par you will be very pleased as this stretch of the course is affectionately known by members as 'Amen Corner'. In addition to a well kept and nicely balanced course, the clubhouse provides a welcoming atmosphere and serves an excellent range of food and drink.
