Sussex is one of several counties on the south coast of England, but its golfing prowess is not with links courses, rather with glorious heathland layouts.

With the population of Cornwall well under a million – though it is boosted by considerable tourist numbers throughout the summer months – the quality of the courses understandably tends to outweigh the quantity.

If you fancy a stay-and-play during your time in Sussex, then look no further than the East Sussex National Resort. With 36 holes and a hotel offering more than 100 rooms, it is a cracking spot for a weekend away. The East Course has hosted the DP World Tour's European Open on two occasions, while the West Course is the longer of the two layouts at ESN.

For those looking for pure golfing happiness in Sussex, then there are plenty of options. West Sussex (Pulborough) is one of the most natural and aesthetically pleasing heathland courses in the country. Piltdown and the Old Course at Royal Ashdown Forest could also lay a claim to that title.

The likes of Crowborough Beacon and the Downs Course at Goodwood add to the strengths of Sussex, but if you're looking for links offerings, you have to travel to the east of the county at Rye.

How we compiled our Sussex list
We updated our Sussex list when we created our NCG Top 100s list of the best golf courses in England. If one course from this list is above another in our England list, then it will also be above it in our Sussex list.
