England's North East is one of the largest areas of the country, and one of the best for golf. The North East of England has a mixture of links courses on the coast, and some inland tracks that rank highly.
The North East, which includes the counties of Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside and County Durham - along with the cities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough - has a population of roughly 2.5 million people, with plenty more visiting the region in the summer.
Any of those three cities could be a good base for a golf trip to the North East, with Newcastle being the biggest of the trio. It also sits somewhat in the middle of the region, with routes north and south.
The region has three cracking links courses, stretched across the length of the area. The most northerly is Goswick, which is close to the border with Scotland. James Braid, Frank Pennink and the design duo of MacKenzie & Ebert have all had a hand in the way Goswick looks, feels and plays, while running along the North Sea coastline.
Seaton Carew and Dunstanburgh Castle are the other stunning links layouts, both with contrasting backdrops. The latter features the castle itself as the stunning backdrop for several holes, while Seaton Carew plays with the industrial background of the region.
Move further inland and there are some great parkland courses. The Northumberland plays its way through Newcastle's Gosforth Park Racecourse, while the Colt Course at Close House has been the host of the Betfred British Masters on the DP World Tour on multiple occasions.
How we compiled our North East list
We updated our North East list when we created our NCG Top 100s list of the best golf courses in England. If one course in the northeast is above another in our England list, then it will also be above it in our North East list.
