PGA Aroeira

A mile from the beach, and less than half an hour from Portugal’s capital city, PGA Aroeira Lisboa is arguably in the perfect place for a golfing resort, with everything you could wish for on the doorstep almost.

 

The resort is situated less than 20 miles to the south of Lisbon, with the city of Setubal also within a half hour drive to the south east. Two stunning golf courses are at the newly named PGA Aroeira - the PGA Aroeira No.1 and PGA Aroeira No.2. Frank Pennick was the man to design the No.1, which opened in 1973. Pennick brought a touch of the English heathland to the Portuguese coastline with his design of the PGA Aroeira No.1 Course. Donald Steel added the No.2 to Aroeira’s portfolio in 2000.

 

The two golf courses both provide their own challenges, with the No.1 having hosted the Portuguese Open twice in the 1990s. After opening in 2000, the No.2 has since hosted Ladies European Tour Qualifying School and the Portuguese Ladies Open on several occasions. The resort also plays host to a stunning Golf Academy, which provides lessons and tuition for both adults and children, with the Junior Academy focussing on the kids.

PGA Aroeira Lisboa is the home to two glorious 18-hole courses - the PGA Aroeira No.1 and the PGA Aroeira No.2. The PGA Aroeira No.1 was designed by Frank Pennick and opened in 1973, while the No.2 came in to complement its older brother in 2000, with a Donald Steel design.

 

When the PGA Aroeira No.1 was opened at Aroeira back in 1973, the UK press affectionately christened the course as the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’, with Frank Pennick’s design adding that English heathland touch to the region.

 

The course winds its way through tall pine forests, and plays at 6,650 yards, meaning that it is not the longest course. However, the design of the No.1 means that accuracy from the tee is required more than power. 

 

The Portuguese Open was held on the PGA Aroeira No.1 in both 1996 and 1997, with Wayne Riley and Michael Jonzon being the men to win the DP World Tour event at Aroeira. The course has also played host to the Ladies European Tour and the European Men’s Club Trophy in its decorated history.

 

The PGA Aroeira No.2 was designed by the world-renowned golf course architect Donald Steel. The course opened in 2000, but only after Steel had made sure to comply with DP World Tour recommendations so that the course could hold tournaments in its future. 

 

The course features plenty of water hazards, with five lakes bordering the course at different times during the round. The No.2 Course at Aroeira has gone on to play host to the Portuguese Ladies Open on several occasions, as well as Qualifying School for the Ladies European Tour.

 

The PGA Aroeira Academy was only launched in 2015, but it has already become a key part of the resort. Expert tuition and coaching from a team of qualified professionals is on offer at the Academy. 

 

These classes are taught out of the practice facilities at Aroeira, which is next to the two courses at the resort. There is a lengthy driving range and a short game area, so golfers can work on both their long and short games before taking on either of the two courses at the resort. 

 

The PGA Aroeira Academy is also the home to a Junior Academy, which is a training centre for those aged 4 to 16. The purpose of the Junior Academy is to get children into the sport, and then to provide coaching for them to improve their technique, and the mental side of the game.
