As Cornwall's closest neighbour, Devon also benefits from having the coastline on both its north and southern sides, with an array of stunning links layouts on offer.

In terms of its population, Devon is the largest county in the southwest, with more than a million people calling it home. Barnstaple in the north and Plymouth in the south are good spots to call home for a golf trip to Devon, acting as bases for the courses nearby.

Saunton is one of the best 36-hole venues in the entirety of the United Kingdom. Both the East Course and the West Course at Saunton are not just among the best in Devon, but are ranked on the NCG Top 100s: England list. The county is also the home to most historic golf course in the country - Royal North Devon. This layout, just a few miles down the coast from Saunton, is the oldest golf course in England, dating all the way back to 1861.

On the south coast of the county sit another trio of great courses. Both East Devon and Thurlestone sit on the coastline of the English Channel, while the glorious Yelverton is slightly further inland, located between the Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

How we compiled our Devon list
We updated our Devon list when we created our NCG Top 100s list of the best golf courses in England. If one course is above another in our England list, then it will also be above it in our Devon list as well.
