Welcome to the NCG Top 100s list of the very best golf courses in Wales.
Golf dates back to the 15th Century, originating in the eastern part of Scotland. It was almost four centuries later by the time golf reached Wales.
Tenby is widely regarded as the oldest golf club in Wales, dating back to 1888. Seven years later, the Welsh Amateur Championship was held for the first time, played at Aberdovey. The first professional tournament was hosted at the start of the 20th Century.
The Celtic Manor Resort became the first Welsh venue to host the Ryder Cup, doing so in 2010. The event, which became the first to finish on a Monday, was played on the newly-constructed Twenty Ten Course.
Our list of the best golf courses in Wales features a mix of both coastline links layouts and inland moorland venues. This is the gold standard of lists when it comes to Welsh golf.
The list stars the likes of Royal Porthcawl, Royal St David's, Aberdovey, Pennard, and all three courses at the Celtic Manor Resort - the Twenty Ten, Roman Road and Montgomerie. Like all of our lists, it is a list that is sure to stimulate debate and inspire future golf trips in equal measure.
How did we get our top 40?
We compiled a shortlist of 80 courses from across the length and breadth of Wales, aiming to include all courses that we felt had a realistic chance of making the final top 40.
Our panellists spent the entirety of the 2022 season playing courses around Wales, with their thoughts and feelings being brought together to create the NCG Top 100s: Wales list.
