The Castlemartyr Resort is one of the finest golfing resorts in the south of Ireland, situated within a 20-mile drive from the city of Cork. The resort is home to an inland links-style golf course and great practice facilities, along with sublime accommodation and a country club for hotel guests and local residents alike.

The golf course at Castlemartyr is one of the finest of its type, an inland links layout. Designed by Ron Kirby, who has had his hand in many a course around the isle of Ireland, it is a very different type of golf course to what you would normally expect to find in this part of the country. There is a great range of three-shot par 5s, long par 3s and short par 4s, with a burn running throughout the course that comes into play on the majority of holes.

For those who want to continue to be active away from the golf course, Castlemartyr also has tennis courts, and offers guests both cycling and walking routes around the grounds of the estate as well. The Spa & Country Club is home to a fully equipped gym and swimming pool, while those looking to relax can also use the spa facilities to do so, with a range of treatments available.

When it comes to accommodation, Castlemartyr has some of the most elegant rooms around. Even the standard offering – the Deluxe Rooms – come with smart TVs, high speed Wi-Fi and king-sized beds. There are plenty of choices when it comes to rooms in the hotel, along with a range of holiday homes for larger groups as well.

Castlemartyr Resort Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

An Inland Links

You don’t see many, but Castlemartyr is home to a glorious inland links, and one of the finest attempts at creating a links course away from the coast. Ron Kirby, one of the best course designers of his generation – and a man that helped shape Corballis Links, Dromoland Castle and Old Head Golf Links among many others – was the designer of the 18-hole layout at Castlemartyr.

It plays in that inland links style, and pushes past 6,700 yards from the tips. A drivable par 4 gets you on your way, and it could well lead to a circle on the card at the very first chance. From there, you will come across a burn that winds its way around and through several of the fairways on the front nine, while the Castlemartyr Woodway stands as the southern boundary of the course, coming into play down the entirety of the right side of the par 5 4th.

3 and 5 are the par 3s on the front side, with the latter pushing past 210 yards from the championship tees, and to a shallow green guarded by a quartet of bunkers. It is followed by another short par 4 though, so you can gain any shots back that you may have lost. 11 and 15 are the two longest holes on the property, both measuring around 565 yards. Both are strong dog-legs to the left, and you will need three solid shots to get home on each hole.

14 is the longest of the par 3s at 240 yards from the tips, and once again, it is a shallow landing zone on the green, so distance control is vital. The course then finishes with the longest of the par 4s. The 18th at the Castlemartyr Resort is 475 yards from the tips, and once again, it is a shallow target to aim for with the final approach shot of the day!
