Golf Barriere Deauville Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Resorts

A Tour-Hosting Golf Course

Tom Simpson was the man behind the original design of the golf course at Golf Barriere Deauville, which opened in 1929. Once the 27-hole design had been restored back to how it was following the Second World War, Henry Cotton was then drafted in to upgrade the course. Over the years, the venue has played host to both the Open de France on the DP World Tour and the Ladies Open de France on the Ladies European Tour. It has hosted the women’s national open annually since 2022, with the likes of Chiara Tamburlini and Anna Huang having been victorious at Golf Barriere Deauville.

Today, it comprises of three nine-hole loops – the Rouge, the Blanc and the Bleu – with the Rouge/Blanc combination being the main 18-hole course, also known as Diane Barriere. Running past the 6,600-yard mark from the tips, this par 71 layout is not for the faint-hearted, especially as it starts with a tricky dog-leg left around the driving range. Hook your tee shot and you will be reaching into your golf bag to start again... Sand is a key factor throughout the course, with an incredible trap running around the front of the 2nd green, before you then come across no fewer than eight bunkers on the long par 3 3rd.

Back-to-back par 5s around the turn provide good scoring opportunities as they wind in opposite directions. The 9th bends its way round to the left to bring you back to the clubhouse, while the 10th takes you back away from the hub of the golf course, and moves sharply to the right. Once again, sand is the name of the game on 10, with five large traps in play throughout. A run of four par 4s follows, before the two very contrasting short holes come at 15 and 17, with the latter playing almost 60 yards longer!

The Bleu, also known as Lucien Barriere, starts and ends at the clubhouse, just like the other two loops of nine at Golf Barriere Deauville. It sits at the southern side of the resort, and begins with a par 3. Just like the Rouge and Blanc nines, tree-lined fairways and plenty of bunkers are the main focus of the golf course, while the Bleu nine also has the longest hole on the property – the 550-yard par 5 8th. All three nines offer an exciting and fun afternoon on the golf course, while also testing every aspect of your game.
