52nd
The Ombria Algarve is not like the majority of Portuguese golf resorts, in the fact that it does not sit right by the coastline of the country. Instead, its charm comes from the fact is lies in the Portuguese hills, and offers stunning views from its location. Oh, and if you add in the glorious golf course, accommodation and spa facilities, then you’re in a Portuguese paradise.
The golf course at the Ombria Algarve winds its way through the hills, and is played in two loops of nine. The front nine has a river that running through it, coming into play on eight of the nine holes on the opening half of the course. Though there is no water in play on the back nine, it does not make it any less demanding, with stunning views throughout the closing half.
Away from the course, there is plenty to do in the resort and region. The Spa by Viceroy is the resort’s prime location for wellness and relaxation. There is a Finnish sauna, Turkish baths and a steam room among the facilities, while treatments and massages are also on offer. Guests and residents can also take in the surroundings with a walking path, longer hikes, cycling tours and much more.
There is a wide range of accommodation, with the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve being the venue’s main hotel. There are more than 140 rooms in the hotel, along with a variety of villas that can also be rented out for a week’s stay in the Algarve. There are also real estate opportunities, with the Alcedo Villas and Oriole Village as just part of what is on offer for those that might fancy a more permanent piece of the Portuguese life.

Ombria Algarve Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts
Golf in the Countryside
The golf course at Ombria Algarve was designed to be as friendly to the environment as possible, all while creating the best possible golfing experience. Jorge Santana da Silva was the man behind the design of the golf course at Ombria Algarve, one that beautifully blends into the natural landscape, and uses said landscape to cause danger and excitement.
It is a course than runs in two nine-hole loops, both of which are very different. The front nine plays across the northern side of the resort, and has water in play on all bar the short 4th. Three par 5s, including a pair to kick off your round, both offer scoring chances, but also the opportunity to start with some big numbers on your card thanks to the water hazards. There is also a trio of par 3s in a four-hole run, with 4, 5 and 7 all being short holes at Ombria.
Thankfully (you might be thinking by this point), the water dissipates on the back nine, which sits to the west and south of the accommodation at Ombria Algarve. The par 3 13th sits in the bank of the hillside, offering something different to the rest of the round. At just 300 yards, the closing hole could well be a risk-reward par 4. If you’re a big enough hitter, then the green might be in reach (depending on the tees you’re playing from). If it is, then avoiding the bunkers that litter the area around the putting surface is key.
