Pannal

Pannal | NCG Top 100s

Pannal is recognised as one of the finest courses in North Yorkshire. It is predominantly a tree-lined parkland the climbs to higher ground with pine trees and the occcasional gorse bush. Located close to the spa town of Harrogate, it boasts views of Almscliffe Crag to the west, the Crimple Valley to the north and the rolling Yorkshire countryside to the east. The course has hosted several prestigious events – including regional Open qualifying and the Yorkshire County Championship. It dates back to 1906 and the first professional was the 1902 Open champion, Sandy Herd. Pannal was officially opened in 1908 with a match between James Braid and Harry Vardon. The original architect is unknown but just before the Great War, Alister MacKenzie was engaged to improve the course. In 1972, Lee Trevino played an exhibition match at Pannal – the day after he won the second of his two successive Opens, this one at Muirfield.
