England's south-western county is home to some of the nation's most spectacular courses. As befits a part of the country famous for its coastline – and with not one but two coasts – the most notable courses are all by the sea with just the occasional notable exception.
With the population of Cornwall well under a million – though it is boosted by considerable tourist numbers throughout the summer months – the quality of the courses understandably tends to outweigh the quantity.
The most logical base for a trip to this part of the world is Newquay, which also has its own airport for those who would prefer to avoid a long drive. That said, Cornwall does offer a couple of stand-out play-and-stay options. The first of those comes in the shape of St Mellion, to the north of Plymouth and bestriding the Cornwall/Devon border.
The other is the Trevose Resort, which offers a range of attractive holiday accommodation, all within walking distance of the 1st tee and the outstanding clubhouse. Trevose is much-improved in recent years. It is exceptionally well presented and keeps the entertainment levels high all the way round.
In purely golfing terms, the star attraction is undoubtedly St Enodoc. This is a course that inspires universal affection and if the stretch in the middle dips a little in terms of drama, the start and the end of the course are truly exceptional. Talking of entertainment, there are few more thrilling links courses than Perranporth. If you like your golf to be natural and full of character then do not miss a trip here.
