It is easy to get carried away and dismiss The New as a bit of a diversion from The Old, but this is steady, good golf. In the past ten years, some gorse has been cleared and exposed patches of sandy scrub to great effect.

The New is many's favourite St Andrews course. Fine links turf and true greens are what characterise the New.

Very playable thanks to its flatter fairways and greens than its famous neighbour. Still has its unique challenges, the long 200 par 3 9th with out of bounds left and gorse right was a favourite.

With calm decision-making, opportunities to score on the New are more plentiful than on the Old.

Course management is key. The over-ambitious could find themselves in the pretty but lethal yellow gorse or the fearsome fairway sand traps which punctuate The New.

A classic links that sits comfortably next to it's older brother. 8 and 9 are the standout holes.

Classic traditional links. Well presented in great condition. Slow start to the course but some beautiful and challenging holes from the middle of the front 9 onward. Not too many memorable holes however.

Probably the best strategic course of the 7 courses (now 8 with Dukes)
