Situated just ten miles from the centre of the nation's capital, The Addington is the perfect definition of heathland golf.
Designed by JF Abercromby, the course became known as 'Royal Addington' in between the two World Wars, thanks to its prestigious membership.
The course only measures 6,300 yards, but with a Par of 69, it is not the shortest. It is still a tough test of golf, which has gotten significantly tighter throughout the years.

A Brief History of The Addington Golf Club
July 1913 saw the Addington Golf Syndicate come up with the idea for the club. JF Abercromby was one of the men involved, and he had already had a hand in both Worplesdon and Coombe Hill.
Due to the First World War, it would not be until 1919 that The Addington was officially opened. The venue originally played host to two golf courses, with both the Old Course and the New Course. However, the New Course did not stand the test of time, and it is now the site of a housing estate.
In 2019, Clayton, De Vries & Pont were given the task of trying to return the course to the original plans that JF Abercromby set out. Since then, the course has become more open thanks to the removal of several trees around the property. There are also plans in place to increase the size of some of the greens.

The Addington is one of few sub-70 par golf courses in the NCG Top 100s, but this par-69 venue is a stunning track, and long too. It measures 6,300 yards from the competition white tees and provides a stern test.
Uniquely, the first par-4 is not until the 4th hole. Two par-3s and a par-5 kick things off. It starts with a 155 yard par-3 before you then take on the longest hole on the course. The 560 yard par-5 2nd can be an early make or break for your card, and if that doesn’t wreck it, the 210 yard par-3 3rd is sure to have a go.
Get through this tricky opening trio and you then confront the hardest hole on the course. The 4th is 440 yards and, though it is dead straight, danger lurks. The 435 yard par-4 5th provides no let-up before you eventually get to the two easiest holes on the opening nine. The 7th is a 150 yard par-3, followed by back-to-back par-4s to end the opening half.
The back nine starts much easier than the front. A sub-400 yard par-4 is followed by a 140 yard par-3 and a sub-500 yard par-5. Make sure you take advantage as the 13th, the longest par 3 on the course, weighs in at 230 yards. From there, you have one more par-5 and one more par-3 to contend with, along with three par-4s.
Our Panellists Notes for 2025
Dan Murphy: The ongoing changes here are jaw-dropping in ambition and visually. I strongly suspect The Addington’s rise does not end here
David Walker: A high-class heathland course which will only get better over time
Greg Webber: Extensive tree removal has vastly improved the visual and playing characteristics.
