Because Alwoodley was Dr Mac's first effort, it is perhaps somewhat surprising that top to bottom it is a very well designed course. The course comes together in an exceptional manner in that it is a classic example of the whole being better than the sum of its parts. Not that there aren't exceptional holes, #s 5, 8 and 14 are very fine holes with the 8th being one of the best three-shotters with which I'm acquainted.

MacKenzie's Original is also one of his finest. There's not a single hole here I wouldn't be delighted to play.

A very good challenge, particularly off the back tees. Alwoodley is right up there with the finest surrey heathlands.

Alister MacKenzie’s first design and this is a course which has lasted the test of time with trademark green complexes and sublime routing making the best of the best of the springy moorland-heathland turf aided by recent renovation and maintenance work.

The work that is being done by Clyde, Craig and the team at Alwoodley and the R&A to restore the heath is absolutely top draw. I ** not sure I have ever played a better conditioned golf course that this is currently
