Thoroughly charming is Southport & Ainsdale. I admit to be taken completely by surprise on my most recent visit which is why I like to revisit courses after some time. With as many as ten memorable holes it is stupefying as to why Southport & Ainsdale is often seen as an added attraction to Birkdale, Lytham & Hoylake. I don't have another 30 years to wait for the next visit.

Though it lacks the wow factor of its immediate neighbours, Southport & Ainsdale is an outstanding course. The 16th and 17th holes are all-timers.

The current greenkeeping staff have transformed Southport & Ainsdale into a high quality links. The speed and consistency of the greens was truly impressive.

Some truly unique holes make this a very good golf course and a lot of fun to play.

Played this during Open week and was a sensational experience. Grass coverage on the greens was exceptional given the dry weather and the greens were extremely fast and smooth. The bunkering, elevation change and green sites, make this perhaps the most authentic links experience on this coast

Not many top courses start with a par 3 and if you do it should at least be a good one which is mot the case at S&A as they start with a great one. S&A is a thinking man's course epitomised by the crater-like Gumbleys bunker on the 16th, can suffer due to proximity to some world class courses in the near vicinity

It is truly Beautiful, with a homely, traditional feel. Excellent presentation. Some fantastic holes, good mix of holes.
